Art test

This was a art test I did for a potential client. Sadly I was not the choice for the job. I was really enjoying the art test and was hoping I was the guy to fill the role. Yet this industry is full of talent so hopefully next time I'm the guy celebrating to getting the job. Congratulations to whoever you are.

15 monochromatic pen/marker feeling sketches. This actually took me a bit longer then I expected. Most of the time I throw loose lines and develop a unique looking silhouette first. from there I like to then start to develop form. Its just my personal way of doing it but line work is so much slower to me then just jumping in and carving the design. It allows me to much faster decide if this design is working or not. Yet the doctor ordered what the doctor ordered so here it is.

Next up on the test was the environment landscape. It was to be a underground ruined elven city. Well as I was working on the sketches above I was thinking about the overall feel I wanted for this. I did some various thumbs before painting but they had a similar feel to them since I had been thinking about this for hours.

I wanted the elven city to feel as if it was over run by goblins or bandits. Maybe even Orcs. The city would still feel alive but ruined. Fires light threw out the halls by the current occupation of enemy's. The feel of this city's lighting was to make it feel like it was built on top of a large gold mine. I pictured these elves being dark, greedy and selfish. They lost this vast wealth to there hunger for the treasures. Possibly opening the chasms to the enemy's from over mining.  You and your friends come storming around the corner to hear a very loud roar. Then suddenly a dragon appears and lands blazing fire among the occupying enemy. The goal would now be to either fight your way threw to defeat the dragon or try to escape to the other side to be free of the zone. I of course would then see the dragon landing on the last bridge you cross and a major battle would ensue. Thus bringing down the dragon!

The last thing was to create 3 Sauron like bad guys. Then choose one to render. I took some time to think about these guys before I started.

1. The first was this Agent of chaos. The Sauron feel of being the overlord. He is a sibling to Death himself. He never got to show his worth. Always shunned by his family he decided to betray the order of death and come into this world. His goal now is to bring chaos and misfortune to the world.

2. The second character was a much more brute Sauron feel. He was to have that strong feeling like he could walk out on the battlefield and the battle would stand still. That feeling of immediate loss. Until some Hero man or women jumps up and gives moral back to there people.

3. The third was more of a evil cunning villain. He is the betrayer. I picture him very much like the way Sauron's voice is in a lot of the film. His whispers and secrets are his major weapon. I would imagine him being more magical and shouting loud chants (effects if you can imagine!) or summoning forth minions to defend him self from the outer dimensions. He is the one that convinces you a great journey is ahead full of treasure and fame. In the end he uses your strength and ability to betray you and become a dire threat.

In the end I decided to roll with the second to finalize. It was a hard choice as I was having fun with them all. Yet I think the 2nd held that strong fantasy feeling of being the brute boss you would roll up and have a major battle with.

Hope you enjoy the work.
